Who will start next season?

OK, we now know Andrew Wiggins won’t be in the equation next year. Dude is going to Kansas instead. Fine. Carolina is too clogged at the forward spot anyway. Wiggins is also likely a one-and-done guy, so his impact wouldn’t be long-term. Not that we couldn’t have used him, but still. We’ll take our chances with the great roster already assembled.
With that out of the way, let the speculation about the starting line-up begin. Three players seem pretty safe locks to start: Marcus Paige, P.J. Hairston and James Michael McAdoo. The other two slots are very much up for grabs. You would think that after the success Roy Williams had with the smaller line-up last season, he might go in that direction again, but he has already hinted that won’t be the case. UNC will try and return to a more traditional rotation with a true 5 on the floor. That still leaves us with so many questions. Could McAdoo move to the 3 spot and become more of a shooter and slasher? Or will McDonald become a starter, keeping McAdoo at the 4? Will any of the freshmen earn starting honors?

We love these ridiculously early pre-season polls. Here’s CBS‘s, and they have the Heels at #8, behind Kentucky, Louisville, Duke, Michigan State and others. And as Adam Lucas has pointed out, Carolina will face 5 of the top 6 teams on the list next season, including an away game vs. Michigan State in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. It’s gonna be a tough one.

We can already tell that we’re gonna love Kennedy Meeks next year, no matter how much or how little playing time he actually sees. He’s really personable on camera, and he clearly loves UNC. Watch him tell Jabari Parker he was “stupid” for not going to North Carolina. Best of all, Kennedy talks about how he loves to bang down in the post with the big boys. Yes! This is exactly what the team needs, a bruiser with a post game in the mold of Sean May.

Carolina a #3 seed…in next year’s tourney

Yeah, this is kind of ridiculous, but Joe Lunardi over at ESPN has put out his postseason bracket looking at the 2014 tournament, and he has UNC as a #3 seed. With Hairston and McAdoo returning, that seems about right. Other notes: Kentucky goes from losing in the first round of the NIT this year to becoming a #1 seed next. Also seems probable. And Lunardi also puts Dook on the #1 line. Really?

THBTHD’s assist of the year

On the year-end awards episode, we decided not to hand out a trophy for best assist, because few had been particularly spectacular. Paige is a great point guard, but he doesn’t yet dish the flashy kinds of dimes we got from Kendall Marshall. That said, one listener suggested this assist in the FSU game, and it is pretty strong. Check it out at the :23 mark. Paige drives, draws and throws a no-look bounce pass to a cutting McAdoo. Nice.

THBTHD’s Dunk of the Year

If you listened to this week’s Awards Spectacular episode, you know that this was our pick for best throw-down of the year. Yes, it’s a bit of a surprising choice in Desmond Hubert, considering this was 2 of his probably 10 points all season, but still, it’s a nice dunk and we’d love to see more of this from Dez next season. He could become a force inside with some additional muscle and some work in the offseason.

And here’s the runner-up from Tokoto, who’s probably the best athlete and dunker on the team. He didn’t get the top spot because his best dunk came against East Tennessee State, while Hubert threw it down on FSU. Fast forward to about the 5:06 mark to see J.P. get busy.

Who will go and who will stay?

Yep, it’s that time of year again when we Carolina fans sit on pins and needles waiting to see who from the roster will head to the NBA. Will UNC lose its top scorer for the fourth year in a row? Here’s hoping not.

Perhaps we’ll have a decision this week, but based on rumors at least, things are looking good. PJ Hairston and James Michael McAdoo have supposedly decided to return. Reggie Bullock is leaning towards returning, but is a bit more on the fence because of his family situation and the money the NBA would offer.

Seems like smart decisions all around. If you look at mock drafts, only McAdoo cracks the top 20 — and just barely. Hairston has moved up considerably, based on his strong play late in the season. He’s now at #37, up almost 50 spots from earlier projections. Bullock is just ahead of him at #36 — also a bump up. Still, if those numbers hold, that’s hardly guaranteed money.

Now, just imagine if all three of those guys came back next season. Couple that scoring and experience with the new talent Carolina has coming in, and it might be a team for the ages.

Jackson Simmons to transfer? [insert UCLA joke here]

We’ve heard rumblings that the fan-favorite forward may be looking to head to another school after this season. (No, not to the Bruins.) We love the guy, but can anyone really blame him? He had a really nice season, making the most of limited playing time and he’s really upped his profile compared to his freshman year. Next season, you gotta figure he will be stuck even deeper on the bench, as Joel James and Brice Johnson (hopefully) mature, and with Kennedy Meeks and Isaiah Hicks coming in and eating up more PT, if not starting.

Word is, Simmons is looking for a smaller school that doesn’t have a national powerhouse basketball team, or possibly even a Division II school. He would most likely be a starter in a situation like that and get to spend the remainder of his college career on the court, instead of on the pine. But again, this is just a rumor. We hope it’s not true. Simmons is great player to have in the locker room and in practice, even if he doesn’t play in games. He’s solid in fundamentals and works his ass off. Someone print up some “Action Jackson” T-shirts now so we can start a campaign to keep him.
